Every spectrum license is an important asset to the wireless network provider who owns it. Interference diminishes the value of that asset by reducing license capacity and coverage. Every customer using a network is important as a source of revenue. Interference negatively impacts the service they experience which often leads to churn.
How ISCO improves service and creates more revenue
If a network is used in any of the following situations it is likely susceptible to service-affecting interference and noise.
Dense Urban
These are heavily populated areas with large amounts of cellular calling. High traffic volumes come from both residents and people entering
and leaving the area as they travel through and visit various destinations. Interference risks include:
• Multiple carriers within a small geographic region
• Large numbers of callers
• Heavy use of data-intensive features
Marine
Both resort areas and waterfront cities and towns have marinas where boats of all sizes dock. These areas experience heavy traffic on the
water, as well as private and public boats docking for a quick visit or an extended stay. Passengers and crew with cellular phones increase
call volumes as they enter the area. Interference risks include:
• Bi-directional amplifiers (BDAs) which are often left on while the boat is docked
• Increased unpredictable traffic from visitors using cell phones
450MHz WLL
Existing 450MHz networks which have been dormant in many places outside the United States are now being deployed with CDMA2000
technology to take advantaqe of 3G capabilities. Frequently these networks are used not just for cellular service, but also for wireless local
loops, even replacing DSL. Lower frequency bands, such as 450MHz, cover larger areas per cell site, reducing the number of cell sites
needed to cover large geographies. This significantly lowers deployment and operating costs. Despite these advantages, there are
interference risks, including:
• A wide variety of potential interference sources (mobile radios, amplifiers, security systems, other RF emitters) across areas
covered by each cell site
• Insufficient regulation to help resolve interference issues with offenders
• Difficulty in proactively monitoring large coverage areas and expensive to troubleshoot complaints
Co-Location and Border Cells
As cell site real estate becomes scarce, carriers are more frequently sharing space with each other. This usually requires building some
protection into the network to guard against interference, but that protection uses up valuable space within the spectrum that is then not
available for revenue-generating calls. Using ISCO's interference mitigation and management products instead allows:
• More aggressive co-location scenarios
• Protection for carriers whose borders run up against each other
CoW/CoLT
Cellular calling needs for short-term special events and emergencies are often supported through temporary equipment called Cell on
Wheels or Cell on Light Trucks/Trailers. Sporting events, conventions, concerts, festivals and disaster relief are some examples of situations
that result in heavy cellular traffic concentrated in one area over a short period of time. Interference risks include:
• No history to enable traffic patterns and interference problems to be predicted accurately
• No first-hand knowledge of interference sources in the area
• Service must often be set up rapidly with little advance planning
Spectrum Re-Mining
Many carriers are upgrading networks from 2G technology (such as GSM) to 3G technology (such as UMTS) to realize the benefits of 3G,
which include higher data transfer rates to support advanced services, such as video and Internet access. Upgrading networks from GSM to
UMTS is simple but costly. Much of the infrastructure is shared with GSM, but new spectrum must be obtained and overlaid on existing
towers. This causes interference risks:
• Re-mining impacts existing spectrum already in use
• Carriers interfere with themselves while upgrading

Chances are your network supports more than one of these applications and your customers are experiencing noise during their calls.
You may not even know interference exists, and certainly may have difficulty identifying interference sources. Even if you can identify them, can you get them to leave your network alone? ISCO's AIM products proactively identify and eliminate interference, ensuring your network provides excellent quality to customers and uses your network to full capacity.
Improve your confidence with spectrum conditioning provided through ISCO's Adaptive Interference Mitigation and Management products.
